Carlo Martinoia arrived in San Francisco via the Isthmus of Panama on June 15, 1852. Born in 1829 to a poor family in Cevio in the Valle Maggia, Martinoia began working at the age of 15 as a mason’s helper, first in France, then in Africa.
Silvio Giuseppe Debernardi was born in Lodano, Ticino, Switzerland, on January 14, 1873, the third son of Pasquale and Teresa (born Tunzi). In April 1891, 18-year old Silvio leaves his village in Valmaggia to reach his two older brothers, Geremia and Golia, in California. Continue reading →
Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti emmigrated to Australia with his uncle Cesare Felice Pedrotti in 1855. He married Mary-Anne Byrnes in Daylesford 1864. The marriage certificate says place of birth is Giumaglio, Valle Maggia. His parents are Giovanni Felice Pedrotti b.1812 -1862 and Giovanna Maria Pozzi B1817–??. Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti 1788-1857 & Anna Maria Pozzi 1790-1826 were his parents. Does any Pedrotti conect with this family line?
Ours is a long and never-ending migration from Moghegno, in Valle Maggia, to California and back. My great grandparents and many other relatives (on both sides) were in the early wave of Ticinese who went to California.
