Our family would like to research our great-grandfather Giacomo Canepa or Caneva who was, according to his marriage certificate, born in Losone. The document is in Spanish since he emigrated to Uruguay in 1875 where all of his descendants were born.
Since he went to America when he was young, we would like to know if there are any relatives there. Continue reading

La nostra famiglia vorrebbe fare una ricerca su nostro bisnonno GIACOMO CANEPA o CANEVA nato a Losone, come conferma il suo certificato di matrimonio. Il documento è in spagnolo perché nel 1875 lui è emigrato in Uruguay dove sono nati tutti i suoi discendenti. Siccome lui e venuto in America da giovane, vorremmo sapere anche se esiste qualche parente.

Luigi Canepa (Luigi Canepa di Filippo) was born in 1839 in Monzonio, Canton Ticino. His parents were S. Gicomo Filippo Canepa (b. 1805) and Maria Conti Maza. His grandparents were Giovanni Canepa and Maria Anzini. Luigi was one of eight children. In 1864 Luigi, age 25 and his younger brother, Angelo, age 23, went to Australia to try their hand at gold mining. Records show that in 1865 Luigi married Mary Jane Pender, age 18 (from Scotland) in Melbourne. At this time his profession was listed as “miner”.
