Carlo Martinoia arrived in San Francisco via the Isthmus of Panama on June 15, 1852. Born in 1829 to a poor family in Cevio in the Valle Maggia, Martinoia began working at the age of 15 as a mason’s helper, first in France, then in Africa.

Cheda e Calzonia, emigranti della contea di Marin

Mio bisnonno Gardinzo Cheda e mia bisnonna Antiona Calzonia sono emigrati in California, nella contea di Marin. Credo che il loro sia stato il primo caseificio di Jewell (Olema). Gardinzo aveva un fratello di nome Peter (morto credo a Petaluma verso il 1919). Ha sposato Mary (?) e ha avuto due figli: Philip Henry e Amelio Cheda. Continue reading
