Seeking information on Cabalzar from canton Graubünden (Grigioni)

From Jody Cabalzar, Australia

I’m seeking some feedback on the emmigration route my x3 great grand father would have taken from Graubunden on his way to Australia in 1863. Christian Cabalzar was born in ~1836 (possibly Flims). He arrived in Australia in 1863 from Liverpool onboard the ship British Trident.

Any thoughts on the road usually trod by the Graubunden emmigrants as they left to seek their fortune on the goldfields?

  1. By 1863, the goldrush in Victoria was really coming to an end. So he would have been disappointed.

I do know that there were Swiss Italians in London – eg the Monighetti’s were there. Carlo came on to Australia, another returned to Biasco, Ticino, and others went on to USA. In my Mattei’s, Pietro spent time in Aust, returned to Cevio, went to Wales and some of his children ended up in USA.

It seems to me that after the first mass immigration of the mid 1850s, there were Swiss Italians in Britian, USA and Aust and if they didn’t put down roots, then they were restless, and moved about a bit.

Interestingly his name doesn’t appear in either Gentili’s or Gervasoni’s records of Swiss Italian immigrants to Aust. Does Cheda have his name?

The journey your x3 GGfather made from Liverpool was straightforward, but how he got to Liverpool is another matter. Have you checked the UK Census records?

    Good Luck,
    Barb
