A Costa from Poschiavo: any clues?

From Pauline D’Astoli, Australia

Does anyone have a link for my family with ancestry from Poschiavo, Canton Grigione? My great grandfather was Guiseppe Costa who came to Australia in 1860 on the Red Jacket. His destination was Sedgwick (Upper Emu Creek) near Bendigo.

He was born about 1835, the son of Giacomo Costa and Anna Maria Zanorali. He worked as a charcoal burner in Australia.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

  1. Pauline,

You might want to take a look at the book: 1989 – Gentili, Joseph – “Swiss poschiavini in Australia”. I read it many years ago, and I believe it has a list of the Italian-Swiss who immigrated to Australia from Poschaivo.

    Take care,
