Giuseppe Antonio Alessandro Vanza (from Pontirone) spent 30 years unsuccessfully searching for gold in Victoria and N.S.W. Was a photographer but became insolvent. Tried tobacco farming in Queensland, no luck.
Three sons, lost one in the Spanish/American War in 1899, another son killed at Gallipoli, third son in Boer and WW1. Wanted to return home to family in Switzerland but had no money to do so. Died a very unhappy man in the Benevolent Asylum at Stradbroke Island Queensland.
