by Carol Grossi Ryan, United States
My grandfather, Domenico Grossi, immigrated to Northern California from Ticino in 1892 from Monte Carasso via Ellis Island. My grandmother Teresa Buzzini, from Brione (Val Verzasca) came to CA sometime in the late 1890’s. There is no record of her at Ellis Island. Does anyone have any information about other possible ports at which she may have arrived in the USA?–possibly even in California?? They both came to CA in search of a better life and to escape the poverty and famine in their home land. They met in Olema, CA, were married and went on to raise their 10 children on their dairy in Novato, CA (Marin County). Nine of their children followed in the dairy industry–some even continuing today! their youngest child is my father, George Grossi, who is now 88. He and his older brother, Jim, are the only remaining of their generation. I encourage any of you who have roots in Ticino to visit there. It is a beautiful and pristine land, rich with culture and
history. We are Blessed to have many relatives and contacts there. Any help regarding my grandmother’s immigration would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
